Sacha Baron Cohen has a new show out called “Who Is America.” Some of the early press has come from high profile conservative celebrities being pranked by Cohen while he was undercover. Sarah Palin was the first, and probably biggest, celebrity prank that was revealed. Cohen purported himself to be a disabled veteran in order to score an interview with Palin, in which he asked a bunch of strange questions. He also pranked a few Republicans, most of whom are not in office, to talk about arming small children in school to protect themselves against shooters.
The premise of arming kids was made to be seen as a ludicrous thing that would never happen. But the reality is much different. Many children are trained from a young age about firearm safety using a hands-on approach with adult supervision. It’s not an uncommon thing for young boys to go with their dad out into the woods and hunt with small caliber rifles. Boy Scouts (ages 10-14) trains kids on shotgun and rifle. At one point in fairly recent American history, schools had gun clubs inside the school itself just like P.E. class.
Should children have pistols and/or rifles on holsters in their class? No. Should they be denied total access to them? Absolutely not. In certain dangerous situations in school, they may be required to use them or understand how to be safe. If it’s not a far cry to teach kids how to run and hide during an attack on a school, then why is it so absurd to teach children firearm safety and also how to handle them?
